Vanish Tom Pawlik Books

Plot/Storyline: 5 Stars

When I began reading this novel, I really thought that it was just some sort of mimic of Left Behind. Boy, did I get surprised. The only similarity is the fact that people vanished. That's it. From there, Mr. Pawlik went in an entirely new direction.

I'm really leery about discussing the plot too much as I don't wish to give spoilers. I will say that, although this was definitely in the Christian Fiction category, there was not one instance of `preaching.' As a matter of fact, more opinions of disdain for religion were shown than any other viewpoint. This novel put a whole new spin on certain religious beliefs.

I will say that the first few chapters were a little slow, but it did pick up pretty quickly. I was enthralled throughout the novel. It was not a matter of just finding out "Why?" It was also all about the journey. I really got caught up in this book.

Character Development: 3 Stars

The character development was the only area in which this novel was lacking. While I learned a lot about each character, in an effort to add `twists', the author also suppressed a lot of information that would have created deeper understanding and more empathy for the characters as I was reading.

The story kept me reading, but I had trouble caring about the characters. This was not just the main characters, but the side characters, also.

Writing Style: 4 1/4 Stars

The sentence structure was pretty simplistic, with an almost YA feel to it. However, it did make for easy, smooth reading. The descriptions were pretty good. The dialogue was also rather simplistic and stilted in places. However, it was mostly realistic.

Editing/Formatting: 5 Stars

Both were of professional quality.

Rating: PG for Adult Situations and Violence

Vanish Tom Pawlik Books Reviews

I loved how it started and thought the sci-fi/fantasy part was well written and thought out, lots of suspense and lots of mystery. It gets 2 stars for that. I knew it was a Christian novel before purchasing (I own many) and I thought the characters questions and struggles with Christianity were good, lots of people go through those issues. I was looking forward to how they would be addressed in the end but it never came. I was extremely disappointed in the ending and it wasn't because of what it included but because of what it lacked. It seemed to focus on a forceful fear based Christianity message that basically boiled down to A,B,C, equals your instant ticket to Hell. No focus on God's grace concerning sin, no focus on God's love and trying to reach people in the story, no addressing the struggles with Christianity that the character's had, no focus on a personal relationship with God and all it entails. It seemed the main character was randomly chosen to be "saved" without any effort on his part. One minute he is still struggling with his relationship with God and next minute he's saved. The story was inconsistent as it really developed the characters and their struggles with Christianity throughout the story and then the end was either, he was saved, the end or they burned in hell, the end. If you want a great sci-fi/fantasy story that delivers not only in the plot but with a positive Christian message, read Arena by Karen Hancock or Edge of Eternity by Randy Alcorn. Those books also deal with sin but more importantly they also bring the positive life affirming message God intended to touch our hearts with.God's message and gift of grace and love should not be fear based. You can't scare someone into being a Christian and even if you do, they aren't doing it for the right reasons if out of fear. People should be coming to God because of his gift of grace and his love and that is the message that needs to be preached.
First of all, don't read this review if you will be disappointed in hearing a spoiler. I will try not to reveal too much. I believe that this book received a lot of unfair ratings by atheists, agnostics, and haters of Christian fiction. I admit that I do not typically relish Christian fiction. I did not read the Left Behind series, but I am familiar with them. I think this was very different. It wasn't about those "left behind" at all. It offers an interesting view on near-death experiences. I actually couldn't decide if this book actually involved an alien species, or if this was a view of armageddon. It had me genuinely puzzled for most of the book. I wasn't SURE what was going on until Connor "disappeared" in the barn. I think the message was good...it ABSOLUTELY made clear that it was not good works that get you into heaven, nor is it going to church every Sunday. It also made clear that being "bad" didn't send you to hell. I think it was an overall good book. It was definitely a "can't put down" book for me, as I couldn't wait to see what happened next and how it would all be resolved. I liked it quite a lot. I will definitely read this author again.
I just got around to reading this on the , and I was pretty much blown away.

To amuse myself, I clicked on all the one-star reviews, and it was pretty much what I expected and I was not surprised by the vitriol that those reviewers would display. It's not about the book itself but the philosphy of the author. Sad, really...

Thankfully, I didn't read any of the reviews prior to reading the book, which kept the surprise ending intact for me. The book has several compelling features It has three people and their stories as protagonists. It has the sudden disappearance of a whole city's population. From that point on, it first appears that this is more of a survival-type book, but it starts getting creepy soon enough. The tension and creepiness builds, and by the end, nothing is quite what it seemed. In the spirit of not wanting to spoil it for other readers, I don't even want to hint at the resolution, which kind of ties my hands about what I would want to reveal. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book as a superb mystery/thriller/horror(?) type novel.
