I read this book some time ago and I had mixed feelings about it. It is dark and annoying at times, touching and cruel at other times. The experienced readers guesses what is going on, but the author manages still to throw some surprises. The atmosphere reminds of the Adams meets mad scientist slash cyborg. The ending was not convincing because it did not match Lucien's progression throughout the book.

It is a great book, the universe is very interesting and unique and the use of elements of very different themes makes the story intriguing.
I have become burnt out with most "modern" Fantasy authors for a while now.

But this I kinda liked. It breaks the mold in som interesting ways, and I'm allways a fan for the slightly twisted story.

Only reason I didn't give it 4, was the way the story jumped back and forth in time.

But will read next book.
This book was more of a two and a half stars really. It was brief and action-packed, but there are a lot of things left unexplained that really needed to be.
I read the book. It was a decent book that moved well. I bought book 2 after reading book 1. Book 2 was disappointing.
I honestly fail to understand how a large number of online reviews have been highly positive. With every other chapter a flash back it is difficult to maintain any rhythm with current events. Story was confusing and to my mind quite pointless. It appears the author is setting up for a reveal later on in the series but I will not come back to find out. Not sure I've seen many balanced reviews on this book to date.
There's clearly a rich imagination at work. Yet the world building fails utterly. It's a mess of Italian names and houses that you neither explore nor care about in the least. I found myself constantly lost and distracted by the pointless details. The action is good, the main character sympathetic, the story - the world? Jumbled mess
Fantastic book. I was really impressed with the storytelling of this book, I just couldn't wait to find out what would happen in the next chapter. The characters are very endearing and the plot was rather inventive. There wasn't much of action or intrigue, but I'd have to say that the author really knows how to set a pace to a story and keep it interesting. Just a wonderful read.
